Mid Century Sputnik Reactive Kilnformed Glass Plate

This plate makes use of the chemical reactions between silver and glasses that contain sulfur and selenium. The base is gold iridized french vanilla glass, a lovely cream color with an iridescent sheen. Small pieces of glass in a variety of sizes burst outward from a central globe. Circles of silver foil revolve around the burst with purple-ochre halos. The natural color of the globe and the burst is the light blue-green seen when the glass crosses onto a silver circle. When it touches the french vanilla base, it turns a darker green-blue that cannot be achieved without this chemical reaction. Because the base glass is iridized, the network of green-blue caverns are sparkly on the bottom.This piece is food-safe, and hand washing is recommended.Diameter: 10 inches (25 cm)Handmade in the United States with glass produced in Oregon.
